Rules of Basketball
Category: NBA Online
Basketball is a game played by two teams who score points by trying to throw a ball into the opposition team’s basket. The team which scores the most points are the winners. In modern rules a team has a squad of 12 players to choose from, only five players are allowed on the court at any one time, with unlimited substitutions during the game.
The basketball game consists of four 10 minute quarters, with a 15 minute half-time break. Also there are two-minute intervals between the first and second quarter, and between the third and fourth quarter. If the game is drawn after the end of the fourth period, the game continues with five minutes of extra time and if need be there will be more five minute periods to break the deadlock. During the game coaches can ask for two one-minute timeouts at anytime during the first half and three timeouts in the second half if they wish to discuss tactics.
The main officials needed for the game are one umpire and one referee. The court is divided between the two of them, after each foul involving a free throw penalty, as well as after each jump ball decision they switch positions
The match starts with a jump ball or tip-off as it is more commonly known. The referee throws the basketball into the air in the centre circle of the court and two opposing players jump up and try to tap it away to a member of their team.
Players move the ball around the court by tapping, throwing, passing, rolling or dribbling the ball. Each player is only allowed two taps before the ball hits the floor, basket, backboard or another player.
To win the game players must try and score by shooting the basketball through the hoop. Two points are awarded for a basket within the three-point semi-circle, and three points are awarded for goals scored from outside this area. Penalty throws, taken from the free-throw line and awarded after a foul, are worth one point. The clock stops when the referee blows his whistle. If a free throw is being taken the clock stays stopped but starts up again when the ball touches a player on the court, exactly the same as you will see in american football you get a full 40 minutes of actual basketball play.
