Penalty throws, taken from the free-throw line and awarded after a foul, are worth one point. The clock stops when the referee blows his whistle. If a free throw is being taken the clock stays stopped but starts up again when the ball touches a player on the court, exactly the same as you will see in american football you get a full 40 minutes of actual basketball play.
